Sustaining Our Food Supply: Honoring Farmworkers This National Awareness Week

3/18/24 6:39 AM

As we observe National Farmworker Awareness Week from March 25th to 31st, it's essential to recognize and appreciate the invaluable contributions of farmworkers. At PlanetTogether, we firmly believe that a sustainable and healthy planet begins with a robust food system, and at the heart of this system are the hardworking individuals who toil day in and day out to ensure that our plates are filled with fresh, nutritious produce.

Building a More Sustainable Food System Starts with Supporting Farmworkers

In 2024, the food and beverage industry continues to grapple with sustainability challenges, contributing significantly to environmental concerns. Agriculture alone accounts for approximately 10% of total greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This statistic underscores the pressing need for sustainable practices within the industry.

Central to this sustainability effort are the farmworkers—the individuals who plant, nurture, and harvest the crops that feed our nation. Despite their essential role, many farmworkers face significant hardships, including low wages, inadequate housing, and limited access to healthcare.

National Farmworker Awareness Week: March 25–31

As we observe National Farmworker Awareness Week from March 25th to 31st, it’s time to pause and truly recognize the immense contributions of farmworkers to our food system—and the sustainability of our planet.

At PlanetTogether, we firmly believe that a sustainable and healthy planet begins with a resilient food system—and that system relies on the dedication of millions of farmworkers across the country and the world.

Why Farmworkers Matter

Farmworkers are the unsung heroes of our food supply chain. From the fields to the packing houses, their hard work ensures that we have access to fresh, nutritious produce year-round. Despite the essential nature of their work, many face:

Long hours and physically demanding labor
Exposure to extreme weather and harmful chemicals
Limited access to healthcare and legal protections
Inadequate wages that don’t reflect the value they provide

Without farmworkers, the global push for food security, sustainability, and climate-resilient agriculture simply isn’t possible.
