So you’ve made up your mind. You know that your company needs an APS system, but you’re not sure where to start.
Don’t worry. You’re not alone. Choosing and integrating an APS software system can be a daunting task for any business, big or small. But it seems that a successful APS software integration is reliant upon one major thing: choosing the APS system that is right for you.
If you haven’t been able to do so, let me redirect you to a recap of our most recent webinar “5 Tips for Choosing an APS System”. This blog will give you all of the ins and outs of choosing the best APS system for your company.
But for those of you who have already done their research, here are four extra tips that anyone ready to take the leap towards APS software integration should consider:
Integrating an APS system isn’t a one-click deal. It takes time to import data, maintain the system, and assure that all is in great working order. Be sure that whatever team you have working with the APS system is fully devoted to making it the source of reason in your company’s planning and scheduling. The last thing you want is to spend money on a product like this and have it fall into the shadows.
We suggest delegating at least one team member in each department to oversee the APS process. This includes: IT, planning, operations management, and shop floor supervision. Building a team to hold one another responsible for the upkeep of your APS will be fundamental in keeping it running smoothly. But don’t worry, most of the data you need to run your APS successfully is already being maintained in your ERP data in the form of routings, BOMs, inventory, P.O.s, etc. so the net new work will be to capture the information that is only in the heads of your team today. That’s an exercise worth doing!
A tool is nothing without a plan of action. Create a list of your company’s planning and scheduling weak points, and make a point to address them with your new APS system. Once you’ve got this, make it a point to do status checks as time goes along. Analyzing your data along the way will keep you engaged with your new system and help you strengthen the true weak spots in your manufacturing processes.
An APS system has a lot that goes into it. Before it can start cranking out plans and schedules, it needs raw data. This process can take time, but usually it’s faster and easier than you think since you have most of the information you need in your ERP system. Perfection won’t happen overnight but before you know it your system will become indispensable to your business and you’ll have company-wide visibility and efficiency like never before.
Once the wheels start turning and the production gets going, you’ll be amazed at how fast things will start moving.
It’s okay to ask questions. And it’s certainly okay to ask for help when you need it. Your APS software development team is here to help you and keep you happy with your product. If you’re having trouble, reach out. They may have just the answer that you’re looking for.
An APS system is a commitment, but it can be one of the best commitments your company will ever make. If you would like to learn more about APS software implementation, or you would like to receive a quote, please click here.
