Professor Maxwell has been on the faculty at Cornell since 1960. Currently he is the Andrew Schultz Jr. Professor of Industrial Engineering. He was a Ford Foundation distinguished visiting professor at the University of Chicago in 1968-69, a visiting professor at the University of Michigan in 1977-78, a visiting professor at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, in 1983-84 and a visiting professor at Stanford University in 1989-90.
He was a consultant in residence at the RAND Corporation in 1965, at General Motors Manufacturing Development in 1977-78, and at SI Handling Systems in 1983-84; currently he is a consultant to several companies. Professor Maxwell is a member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, the Operations Research Society of America, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
He has been a recipient of the annual Excellence in Engineering Teaching Award sponsored by the Cornell Society of Engineers and Tau Beta Pi.
